Now, anyone still inexplicably on Yahoo Messenger will instead be redirected to Squirrel, Yahoo’s invite-only chat app for Android and iOS. Verizon did however keep Yahoo’s ad platform around. It was likely purely a financial move however, given that keeping it alive was spending more money than the messenger was making. ![]() Verizon acquired a struggling Yahoo back in 2017, and eventually made the decision to shut down the messenger service, though it didn’t specify a reason for it. Yesterday, after two decades of service, Yahoo Messenger finally bid the world goodbye as its platform was taken offline.Īnd though it’s unlikely the move inconvenience anyone, we’ll still all remember it with nostalgia as one of the peak Internet trends of the 90s here in India.
